Hello blog readers. The days of hotel restaurants being a culinary no man’s land are ancient history. Today, Joburg’s hotel restaurants aren’t just good;they’re among the best in the city. One of ourfavouritesto hang out at also happens to be one of the most exclusive restaurants on Sandton’s Rivonia Road. You’ll find me at The Maslow Hotel’s Lacuna Bistro every other weekend – eating, imbibing or at least dying to get on the list!
Located in Sandton’s financial district, Lacuna Bistro is one of the busy city’s best-kept secrets. OverlookingTheMaslow Hotel’s beautifully manicured lawns, the bistro is super polished and highly delicious. The space boasts attractive contemporary décor, making it the ideal cool, calm and collected setting for anything from a business lunch or first date, to a family day out. The extensive food offering promises something for everyone – there’s a breakfast bar with over 40 items on the menu, nutritious lunchboxes for those who are too busy to grab a bite and a high tea that combines tart and art in one sitting (complete with the hotel’s signatureSereniTEArange), to name a few.
In the morning, sip an espresso at the long, handsome bar before tucking into one of the best plates of eggs benedict in the city or a freshly baked butter croissant filled with oak-smoked salmon, scrambled egg and dill. In the afternoon, graba spot at the poolandswitch to a glass of chilledchampagneand small plates of sushi to share – be sure to try the tuna tataki with lemon seaweed soil, the salmon, avocado and prawn sushi ‘‘doughnut’ and the dragon roll with sea salt. It wouldn’t be such a bad thing to stay all day devouring variations on the theme of locally-sourced bistro-style cuisine.
At night, it’s all about the drinks, but that’s not to say thecasualishbar food isn’t superb. Itbetter be, because you’ll probably have to wait to dig into a burrito with dragon mayonnaise, salmon, carrot, cucumber and purple slaw or a beetroot-cured egg with baby leaf, Caesar dressing, bacon, anchovies and garlic croutons.
For a three-course meal, make a beeline for the main restaurant, where you can feast your eyes (and your taste buds) on bistro fare made with love. For starters, you’ll pick from the likes of aged fillet mignon steak tartare, live mussels in a garlic champagne dill crème and chicken ramen in a roasted broth for starters. For mains, the menu offers southern-fried buttermilk chicken breast, lambasadowith cumin flatbread, wood-braaied crayfish in athermadorsauce and everything in-between. The Cape Karoo crumble with a Cape fig preserve and seed loaf toast makes for a sweet, but not too sweet, happy ending. At the end of the night, you’ll hopefully have snagged a room justupstairs!
To fully understand why this hidden bistro inside one of Sandton’s poshest hotels has a cult following, you’ll have to go and visit for yourself. The Maslow Hotel hosts regularfoodie events at Lacuna Bistro, from delectable buffet lunches with live entertainment on special occasions like Easter and Mother’s Day, to perfectly planned gourmet picnics with GH Mumm bubbles out on the lawns on Sundays in the summer.
